Japan: Japan will be participating in next year's "Salaknib" military exercises between Filipino and American soldiers, a Philippine Army (PA) official said Tuesday. In a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo, PA spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala stated this will be the first time that Japan will be taking part in the annual joint military exercises between Filipino and American forces.
According to Philippines News Agency, the inclusion of Japan in the "Salaknib" drills comes as the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) with Japan is set to formally enter into force on September 11. The agreement is anticipated to enhance the interoperability between the two nations' militaries, while also affirming their mutual readiness to address emerging challenges and opportunities effectively.
Col. Dema-ala mentioned that the exact number of participants from Japan is yet to be determined. He stated, "No final numbers on the participants." Alongside Japan, Australia is also expected to actively participate in the 2026 iteration of "Salaknib."
Dema-ala highlighted that the planning for "Salaknib" is now centered on the exercise proper rather than the capabilities of the participants. "Salaknib," which means shield in Ilocano, represents the historical bond between the Philippines and Americans, dating back to World War II when Filipino and American troops fought side-by-side. The "Salaknib" drills commenced in 2016.
