Manila: The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced the hiring of Canadian tactician Burke 'BT' Toews as the new head coach of Gilas Pilipinas Women, handing the national squad to a decorated bench strategist with back-to-back championship runs in Japan's top women's league.

According to Philippines News Agency, the SBP revealed that Toews emerged as the top choice following an extensive global search that drew more than a dozen applicants from different countries. This hiring is part of the SBP's ongoing efforts to strengthen the women's national program, as Gilas Pilipinas Women currently hold the No. 30 ranking in the world by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Toews concluded his successful tenure with the Fujitsu Red Waves in the Women's Japan Basketball League, where he led the team to consecutive titles in 2024 and 2025. The Red Waves also secured the prestigious All-Japan Championship, the country's premier basketball tournament.

During his decade-long stint with Fujitsu, Toews cultivated a winning culture, guiding the team to five Finals appearances and earning three Coach of the Year honors. His vast experience in the fast-paced, high-discipline Japanese system will bring a new dynamic to the Filipina dribblers, emphasizing sharp ball movement, relentless defensive pressure, and efficient half-court execution.

Toews takes over from Pat Aquino as Gilas Women's tactician, with major tournaments such as the FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in August and the Asian Games in September on the horizon.
