Manila: The Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced the arrest of six foreign nationals allegedly working illegally at commercial establishments in Binondo, Manila, and a Japanese fugitive at its main office in Intramuros, Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado stated that BI operatives apprehended the six individuals during an enforcement operation at a shopping mall in Binondo on July 29. The foreign nationals were reportedly engaged in retail activities, violating the conditions of their stay and the Retail Trade Act. Authorities are also verifying the identities and citizenship of two other arrested individuals who claimed to be Filipino citizens.

The operation targeted several stalls within the mall following intelligence that foreign nationals were conducting unauthorized retail work. Charges for violating the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, as amended, will be filed against the foreign nationals. Commissioner Viado emphasized the need for fair and firm enforcement of immigration laws, noting that those who violate the conditions of their stay will face legal consequences.

Additionally, 38-year-old Koizumi Haruki was apprehended on July 31 while attempting to extend his visa at the bureau. Japanese authorities had previously informed the BI about a standing arrest warrant for Koizumi, related to violations of Japan's Law on the Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds. Bureau records confirmed his status as an undesirable foreign national, leading to his transfer to the BI's holding facility pending deportation proceedings.

Commissioner Viado praised the vigilance of frontline personnel, highlighting the importance of coordination among operating units and partnerships with foreign law enforcement agencies in apprehending foreign fugitives.
