Kanlaon Eruption Causes Displacement for Antique±os in Negros Island

Antique: Antique±os working or temporarily residing in the Negros Island Region and displaced by the recent unrest of Mt. Kanlaon are being urged to coordinate with their respective municipal disaster risk reduction and management offices (MDRRMOs) in Antique province. This is a necessary step to access potential assistance from the provincial government.

According to Philippines News Agency, Antique Provincial DRRM Officer Broderick Train, who is currently stationed in the Negros Island Region (NIR) to support the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), emphasized the importance of coordination. Train stated that Antique±os should contact their MDRRMOs to ensure they can be located and provided with the necessary aid.

Train highlighted that areas such as La Castellana and La Carlota are within the Kanlaon volcano eruption-affected zones and are known locations where Antique±o sugar migrants work. He mentioned that his efforts in the NIR include gathering data about potentially displaced Antique±os.

He assured that once the information about the displaced individuals is collected, it will be forwarded to Governor Rhoroda Cadiao to determine the assistance required. The Antique PDRRMO team will remain in NIR until the end of April to support OCD-NIR in managing the operation center and conducting onsite monitoring.

Train also noted that personnel from the Municipal DRRMO of San Jose de Buenavista and Caluya were deployed earlier to provide assistance, following a request from OCD-NIR Regional Director Donato Sermeno III.
