Kontra Ga-Pi to Bring Filipino Ethnic Music and Dance to Morocco

Rabat: The Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi), a renowned Filipino performing arts ensemble, is preparing for its inaugural visit to Africa with a 10-day tour in Morocco. This visit is part of the celebrations marking the Philippine Independence and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Morocco.

According to Philippines News Agency, Philippine Ambassador to Morocco Leslie Baja announced that the group will perform for the diplomatic community in Morocco on June 17, followed by a show for the Filipino residents on June 22. Kontra-GaPi is affiliated with the University of the Philippines Diliman and is celebrated for its unique blend of indigenous instruments, dance, chant, and ritual integrated into modern performances.

Ambassador Baja expressed his belief in the ensemble's ability to reveal the artistic side of its audiences, referencing their 2013 performance in Switzerland where he also served as the ambassador. He emphasized the potential of Kontra-GaPi to act as a cultural bridge between the Philippines and Morocco, highlighting the shared cultural roots that define the Filipino identity.

The ensemble has been under the leadership of Prof. Pedro Abraham Jr. for 36 years, with a mission to elevate the artistic reputation of the Philippines on the global stage. In addition to performances, Kontra-GaPi offers lectures and workshops to educate others about the indigenous musical and dance traditions native to the Philippines.
