La Union Farmers and Fishers Receive Cash Aid from Provincial Government

La union: The provincial government of La Union has commenced the distribution of cash assistance to 209 farmers and fisherfolk, marking the first batch of recipients affected by Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-Wong) and the recent surge in fuel costs. The initial beneficiaries hail from the towns of Bangar, Bauang, Caba, Luna, and Sudipen.

According to Philippines News Agency, Justin Marbella, the supervising administrative officer, stated in a phone interview that each recipient received PHP8,000. Marbella mentioned that a second batch of recipients is pending, awaiting the accreditation of their organizations and the completion of necessary documentation. This financial assistance is part of the Agricultural Emergency Trust Fund, established under Provincial Ordinance No. 425-2023, aimed at aiding affected farmers and fishers in their recovery efforts.

In a statement, Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega expressed his support for the farmers and fisherfolk of La Union, acknowledging their significant role in ensuring food security. He encouraged them not to give up, assuring them of the provincial government's unwavering support in overcoming challenges.

Super Typhoon Uwan inflicted an estimated PHP816 million worth of damage to agriculture and infrastructure in La Union, according to a report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as of November 2025. The La Union Provincial Information Office highlighted that the majority of the agricultural damage involved fishing gear, bancas, and high-value crops such as eggplant, palay, tomato, ampalaya, and fish stocks including malaga, lapu-lapu, and bangus (milkfish).
