Abu dhabi: San Juan, La Union: The world's top junior surfers have gathered at Urbiztondo Beach for the World Surf League (WSL) Junior Championships, where they are testing their skills against the challenging waves. The competition features 24 men and 24 women, each eager to make their mark.
According to Philippines News Agency, American Championship Tour (CT) rookie Bella Kenworthy, 17, expressed her excitement about the event. She praised the unique conditions at La Union, highlighting the fun and challenging nature of the waves. Kenworthy is among the surfers competing at The Point in San Juan, where the top two men and women from each of the WSL's seven global regions, along with 10 wildcards per gender, are vying for top honors.
Lukas Skinner, also 17, shared his enthusiasm for the competition, stating his eagerness to showcase his skills on such a prestigious platform. Skinner, who recently returned from a major leg injury, is aiming for a second consecutive Boardmasters title. Having become the first British surfer in 22 years to win the long-running Qualifying Series (QS) on home soil, he is determined to make an impact on the international stage.
The stakes are high, as the winners of this championship will secure spots in the 2026 Challenger Series, providing them with a chance to qualify for the 2027 CT. Brazilian surfer Laura Raupp, a three-time WSL World Junior Championship quarterfinalist, is thrilled to compete in La Union once again. She received a wildcard entry and is eager to perform well in her heats.
Filipino wild card Troy Espejon, competing alongside his brother Toby, as well as Mara Lopez and Cathleya Casals, expressed pride in representing the Philippines. Espejon hopes his effort and dedication will inspire the next generation of Filipino surfers.
The competition also features 2023 world champion Sierra Kerr and runner-up Winter Vincent from Australia. Other notable participants include 2025 Challenger Series standouts Annette Gonzalez Etxabarri of Spain, Arena Rodriguez of Peru, and emerging talents Dane Henry of Australia, Lucas Cassity of Mexico, and Dylan Wilcoxen of Indonesia.
