La union: La Union has recorded an estimated PHP5.9 billion in infrastructure damage due to successive weather disturbances, including 'Emong', 'Mirasol', 'Nando', and the enhanced southwest monsoon, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported Thursday. The damages largely affect roads, government facilities, and some health facilities across the province.
According to Philippines News Agency, the weather disturbances have also caused PHP7 million worth of damage to agriculture. The storms resulted in the destruction of two houses in Luna and Sudipen and partially damaged 51 more in San Fernando City and various towns.
The severe weather claimed one life when an individual was struck by lightning during Nando's onslaught, with two other incidents still under verification. The PDRRMC reported that a total of 4,087 families, or 14,043 individuals, across 147 barangays in San Fernando City and the municipalities of Bacnotan, Bangar, Luna, Bagulin, Bauang, Sudipen, Agoo, Aringay, Caba, Santo Tomas, Rosario, and San Juan were affected by the weather disturbances.
Currently, 212 families, comprising 655 individuals, are being accommodated in 36 evacuation centers, while 154 families, totaling 509 individuals, are receiving assistance outside the evacuation centers. As the province braces for Severe Tropical Storm Opong, it remains under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as of 2 p.m. Thursday.
