Laguindingan: The municipality of Laguindingan is positioning itself to become Northern Mindanao's premier aerotropolis and a future component city under its 2050 Comprehensive Master Plan. During the municipality's convocation program Monday, Mayor Roy Macua said the long-term development blueprint envisions Laguindingan as the future Aerotropolis and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) hub of the proposed Metro Cagayan de Misamis, anchored on the growth of the Laguindingan Airport.
According to Philippines News Agency, Laguindingan Airport currently serves as the primary international and domestic gateway for the Northern Mindanao Region. It primarily provides air access to the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Marawi, as well as the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon.
The master plan includes the establishment of a new local government center and integrated commercial, industrial, and mixed-use districts to attract investment, generate employment, and expand public services. "The municipality is also banking on major infrastructure projects, including the proposed Mindanao Railway Project and the Misamis Oriental Expressway," Mayor Macua said.
Macua said additional projects will help improve connectivity and support economic growth across Northern Mindanao. He added that the local government aims to achieve cityhood, transforming Laguindingan into a strategic gateway for investment, logistics, tourism, and sustainable urban development.
Among the flagship projects under the Aerotropolis concept is the proposed Convention and Exhibition Center near the airport, which will include hotels, convention facilities, office space, and commercial establishments to strengthen business and tourism. The plan also calls for building a new Laguindingan Government Center adjacent to the proposed Integrated Transport Terminal Complex to consolidate government offices and improve public service delivery for the municipality's growing population.
Under the TOD strategy, a railway terminal will also be built next to the Laguindingan Airport to integrate air, rail, and road transport systems, positioning the municipality as a major transportation hub in Northern Mindanao.
