Laguna Governor Revives Information Officers Network to Combat Fake News

Santa cruz: Governor Sol Aragones is reinforcing the fight against fake news by promoting accurate and timely public information that reaches the grassroots level, starting with the barangays (villages). Drawing from her background as a broadcast journalist, Aragones emphasized the importance of providing correct information.

According to Philippines News Agency, Aragones highlighted the necessity of accessible and easily understood public information. During a gathering of the Laguna Information Officers Network (LION) at the Governor's Function Room in Santa Cruz town, she stated, "Mahalaga ang impormasyon. Mahalaga rin na tama ang impormasyon na binibigay natin sa mga tao (Information is important. It is equally vital that the information we provide is correct)."

She further noted, "When you tell a story or report news, it should be understood by everyone," clarifying her governance approach: "I look for what's wrong so I can fix it," focusing on solutions rather than blame. This approach aims to strengthen the dissemination of accurate information at the community level.

Acting Provincial Information Officer Danilo Lucas emphasized the importance of having a public information officer, especially during emergencies. "We must empower grassroots communication to combat misinformation effectively," he said.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Provincial Director Jay Beltran also expressed his support for the initiative. He stressed the significance of unified messaging, stating, "Whoever controls the narrative controls the story. One message, shared clearly, is more effective." Beltran also commended the provincial government's initiatives to provide training and support for local information officers, further strengthening the network's capacity to deliver accurate information to the public.
