Lake, Wetlands Declared Biodiversity Conservation Areas in Antique

San jose de buenavista: The Bongol Lake and Durog Wetlands in Barangay Durog have been officially declared as wetland conservation and management areas. This declaration aims to preserve these natural resources, which are essential for the local community's livelihood, irrigation, fisheries, biodiversity habitat, and cultural significance, according to San Jose de Buenavista Municipal Councilor Ronald Gayatin.

According to Philippines News Agency, Councilor Gayatin was the author of the ordinance that led to the declaration. The ordinance was passed by the municipal council on May 4 and received approval from the provincial board on May 18. The designated conservation areas are intended to support biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, food security, and responsible tourism, including eco-tourism. The ordinance also emphasizes the promotion of these areas as eco-tourism destinations, attracting an increasing number of visitors.

The Bongol Lake and Durog Wetlands are now protected from unsustainable and destructive practices. The ordinance specifically prohibits the large-scale collection of edible shells and other resources, as well as the installation and maintenance of fish pens or fish cages. The barangay council, along with village watchers, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, and the Municipal Agriculture Office, are tasked with enforcing these regulations. They are authorized to confiscate illegally gathered resources and recommend appropriate sanctions.
