Manila: Senator Lito Lapid on Wednesday urged lawmakers to pass a long-awaited measure banning political dynasties, asserting that the reform would create opportunities for young Filipinos aspiring to enter public service.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lapid expressed his support for the proposed law, highlighting how many young leaders are discouraged from running for office due to a lack of resources or support from established political families. He emphasized the need for genuine opportunities for the youth in public service, stating, "We need to give young people a real shot at public service. let's give them a chance."

The senator, currently serving his fourth nonconsecutive term since 2004, acknowledged the resistance the measure faces from officials who might be affected by restrictions on familial control of elective positions. He noted the strong opposition but remained hopeful for the bill's passage for the country's sake.

Lapid addressed concerns about colleagues belonging to political clans, asserting that their presence should not hinder Congress from implementing reforms that widen participation in governance. He affirmed his support for the anti-political dynasty bill, emphasizing that despite his family's potential political aspirations, the law must be upheld.

The Anti-Political Dynasty Act is listed among the priority measures of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. under the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC). Senate President Vicente Sotto III noted that the passage of an anti-dynasty measure depends on establishing a precise legal definition of "political dynasty." Sotto emphasized the importance of clarity before proceeding with broader policy discussions, stating that defining the term would simplify subsequent steps in the legislative process.
