Lanao del sur: Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong stated that the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey supports the House of Representatives' decision to initiate the impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte. He emphasized that the survey results demonstrate the Filipino people's desire, particularly those in Mindanao, for public officials to be held accountable through constitutional processes.
According to Philippines News Agency, the SWS survey, commissioned by Stratbase, revealed that 66 percent of Filipinos nationwide agree that Duterte should face impeachment proceedings, while 19 percent disagreed and 15 percent were undecided. In Mindanao, a region known for its support of Duterte, 55 percent of respondents expressed a desire for the Vice President to address the charges against her.
Adiong commented during a press conference, stating that the survey reflects the actions of the 19th Congress in holding officials accountable, specifically the Vice President in this case. He expressed that this public sentiment serves as a vindication of the House's actions to address unanswered issues through the appropriate forum of an impeachment trial.
Adiong, who signed the verified impeachment complaint against Duterte, argued that the survey results indicate that the House acted in alignment with constitutional principles and the interests of the Filipino people, rather than political motivations. He added that the high survey result advocating for the impeachment trial is a clear validation of the House's commitment to accountability.
Addressing whether public opinion impacts the Senate's actions, Adiong remarked that the survey sends a clear message for leaders to adhere to constitutional guidelines. He emphasized that the Constitution mandates impeachment trials for officials facing serious violations, including betrayal of public trust, underscoring the necessity for the process to proceed.
The House had adopted the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte in February, citing sufficient grounds such as the alleged misuse of PHP612.5 million in confidential funds, with PHP125 million spent over an 11-day period in December 2022. The Senate is anticipated to reconvene as an impeachment court, potentially commencing the trial on August 4.
