Manila: Tingog Party-list Representative Jude Acidre has called for the swift release of pending government subsidies and voucher program assistance designated for private schools for the School Year 2025-2026, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as these institutions face increasing operational costs. Acidre warned that delays in funding are exacerbating the financial pressure on educational institutions that are already struggling.
According to Philippines News Agency, Representative Acidre, who leads the House of Representatives Committee on Higher and Technical Education, supported a previous appeal by the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines and the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Catholic Education. These organizations have urged for a quicker release of government assistance meant for private schools, highlighting the critical role these funds play in sustaining operations.
Acidre described the situation as an "education emergency" affecting many private schools, particularly smaller, mission-driven institutions serving low-income families and underserved communities. He stressed that government subsidies and vouchers are essential for the survival of these schools, which rely heavily on state support to cover salaries, classroom operations, and preparations for the upcoming academic year.
He further explained that subsidy support is vital for keeping classrooms open and supporting both teaching and non-teaching personnel. Acidre pointed out that rising operational expenses, including fuel and energy costs, have increased the financial burden on these schools.
The lawmaker urged the Department of Budget and Management, along with the Department of Education and other relevant agencies, to expedite the disbursement of all outstanding subsidies and voucher assistance. Acidre argued that timely release of these funds is essential for protecting educational continuity, institutional stability, and the welfare of learners and educators.
Moreover, he emphasized that the approval of the 2026 national budget as an "education budget" should result in prompt and comprehensive support for the entire education sector, including private schools that supplement the government's education services.
Citing Republic Act 8545, or the Expanded Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education Act, Acidre acknowledged the role of private education as a partner of the State in delivering accessible and quality education to Filipino learners. He urged the government to act with speed and responsibility, ensuring that schools, teachers, and students receive the support they need for continuity and stability in education.
