Lawmaker Urges LGUs to Provide Free Flu Shots for Seniors This Holiday Season

Manila: As the holiday season approaches and flu cases continue to rise, United Senior Citizens Party-list Representative Milagros Aquino-Magsaysay is urging the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to instruct local government units (LGUs) to offer free flu vaccinations to senior citizens. The increase in crowded places and large gatherings during the festive season heightens their risk of infection.

According to Philippines News Agency, Aquino-Magsaysay emphasized that LGUs should take initiative beyond national guidelines by implementing vaccination campaigns to ensure that seniors have access to free flu vaccines. Data shows that flu is responsible for 50 percent to 70 percent of hospitalizations among adults aged 65 and above.

The lawmaker noted that a single hospitalization can cost families between PHP10,000 to PHP30,000, posing an additional financial burden, especially for those with limited income. By making flu vaccinations readily available at the community level, LGUs can help mitigate the increase in cases, prevent hospitals from becoming overwhelmed, and alleviate the financial strain on families.

Aquino-Magsaysay highlighted the importance of this initiative for seniors with chronic conditions such as diabetes, stroke, or chronic kidney disease. Vaccination can protect them from serious flu-related complications. She urged the public to consider flu vaccination a gift of safety for elders, enabling them to celebrate the holidays with their families without fear.

She also reminded the public to adhere to basic health measures, such as covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, wearing a face mask when unwell, and staying home if experiencing symptoms. Additionally, she encouraged senior citizens and their families to stay informed and coordinate with local barangays for flu vaccination schedules, stressing the need for active participation in health protection and ensuring LGU support in communities.
