Lawmakers Support BSP’s Move to Suspend Mobile Payment Access for Gambling

Cagayan de oro city: Lawmakers from the House of Representatives expressed strong support for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) in its decision to suspend in-app gambling access on mobile payment platforms.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Young Guns bloc released a statement commending the BSP's decisive action, which they believe addresses the surge in online gambling transactions and their negative impact on Filipino consumers' financial well-being. The group highlighted how the integration of e-wallets with gambling platforms has lowered entry barriers, making it easy for Filipinos to engage in online betting with minimal effort.

Deputy Speaker Francisco Ortega V noted that the easy linkage of e-wallets to gambling sites allows individuals, including vulnerable ones, to participate in online gambling from their homes. He emphasized that while this convenience benefits legitimate transactions, it also promotes impulsive betting behaviors nationwide.

The lawmakers pointed out the adverse effects of such access, including increased risks of gambling addiction and financial ruin, alongside societal issues like debt and mental health challenges. Deputy Speaker Jefferson Khonghun remarked on the devastating consequences such as bankruptcy, broken families, and heightened rates of depression and suicide among affected individuals. He praised the BSP's suspension as a necessary measure to protect citizens.

The group also mentioned how in-app redirects to gambling sites exploit the financially insecure, turning secure payment tools into gateways for exploitation. They expressed their commitment to public welfare, aligning with the BSP's memorandum.

Deputy Majority Leader Ernesto Dionisio Jr. highlighted the urgent need for action due to public concerns over online gambling's financial and health impacts. He stated that supporting the suspension ensures mobile payment services focus on productive uses.

Deputy Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong stressed the importance of regulatory standards, advocating for payment systems that promote financial stability. Cagayan de Oro City 1st District Rep. Lordan Suan supported the BSP's initiative, calling it a proactive measure prioritizing citizens' well-being over technological conveniences.

The Young Guns affirmed their unity with President Bongbong Marcos Jr. in addressing online gambling concerns, reinforcing efforts to protect Filipino families and promote financial well-being. Cagayan de Oro City 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez commended the BSP but urged vigilance against illegal payment platforms and monitoring of money transfers through the banking system.

CIBAC Party-List Rep. Eddie Villanueva regarded the BSP's initiative as crucial for safeguarding public welfare, viewing online gambling as a serious threat exploiting vulnerable groups. He advocated for further actions beyond removing app icons, suggesting the abolition of online gambling as the real solution.
