Legarda Highlights Legislative Achievements and Diplomatic Efforts in 2024

MANILA: Senator Loren Legarda has reflected on the legislative and diplomatic milestones achieved in 2024, underscoring efforts to bolster the Filipino spirit and elevate the Philippines' status on the global stage as the nation transitions into 2025.

According to Philippines News Agency, Legarda emphasized the year's accomplishments despite various challenges, citing resilience, collaboration, and progress as key themes. She highlighted several legislative victories, including the passage of the Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Accounting System (PENCAS) Act, the Loss and Damage Fund Board Act, and the Bacoor Assembly of 1898 Act. The Senate also advanced environmental and cultural initiatives through the Blue Economy bill and the Aklan Pi±a bill.

In her statement on Thursday, Legarda reiterated the importance of addressing poverty, expanding access to education and healthcare, and job creation. She noted these as vital components for building a more inclusive and prosperous nation.

Legarda's diplomatic engagements included facilitating high-profile visits, such as those by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the French Senate's Interparliamentary Friendship Group for France-Southeast Asia. Her contributions to international relations were further recognized by the French government, which awarded her the "Officier dans l'Ordre National de la L©gion d'Honneur."

Cultural achievements were also celebrated, with Filipino artists participating in the 60th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. Legarda is now focusing on the Philippines' role as the Guest of Honor at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair.

She advanced various initiatives, including the French Embassy's Blue Nations Initiative and preparations for the UN Oceans Conference in France. Legarda advocated for ratifying the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction treaty to protect ocean ecosystems and launched a scholarship program for Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction leadership.

Legarda's commitment to gender equality was evident through her support of the "Filipina Changemakers" documentary and forum, which highlighted women's roles in climate resilience. At the International Conference for Women, Peace, and Security, she stressed the need for gender-responsive budgeting and the impact of technology on policy development.

Looking toward 2025, Legarda called for collective efforts to drive meaningful change, emphasizing that every action contributes to achieving the Philippines' aspirations.
