Manila: Multinational aerospace and defense manufacturer Leonardo S.p.A. has expressed its readiness to supply the Philippines' multi-role fighter (MRF) requirements, should its Eurofighter Typhoon be chosen. This assurance comes from Enrico Fossatti, head of Leonardo's Eurofighter Export Campaigns for marketing and sales, in response to an inquiry from the Philippine News Agency regarding the timeline for delivery once a contract is secured from the Department of National Defense (DND).

According to Philippines News Agency, Fossatti highlighted that the decision rests with the Philippine government and depends on the final agreements reached with the Eurofighter partner nations. He emphasized that the Eurofighter program is well-established, backed by a solid industrial base across Italy, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, with extensive experience in production and delivery.

Fossatti noted that Leonardo operates four active aircraft assembly lines for the Eurofighter program in each participating European nation. Once a contract is signed, the company and its consortium partners can promptly establish a delivery schedule based on production capacity, fleet size, and configuration requirements. He assured that the approach with the Philippine Air Force (PAF) has been one of full transparency, offering clear and realistic timelines.

He further stated that their objective is to provide the DND and PAF with a reliable delivery plan, facilitating a gradual entry into service of the new weapon system and a smooth transition for PAF pilots and technicians to the new platform.

Previously, DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. mentioned that the Philippines is considering at least five potential suppliers for its MRF program to strengthen the PAF's defensive capabilities. The options include Sweden's SAAB JAS-39 "Gripen," South Korea's KF-21 "Boramae," US-based Lockheed's F-16V "Viper," and the Rafale from France-based Dassault Aviation, alongside Leonardo's Eurofighter Typhoon.

Teodoro pointed out that the acquisition of the MRF will depend on government funding, with the budget for the project ranging from PHP60 billion to PHP150 billion, under the Armed Forces of the Philippines Rehorizon Three initiative.
