LGU and DPWH Collaborate to Tackle Persistent Flooding in Iloilo City

Iloilo City: A collaborative effort is underway in Iloilo City to address the persistent flooding issues that arise with each rainfall, particularly as the rainy season approaches. This initiative was the focus of a meeting convened by Mayor Jerry Tre±as, which included key stakeholders such as the City Engineer's Office (CEO), Office of the Building Official, General Services Office (GSO), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Iloilo City District Engineering Office.

According to Philippines News Agency, Joel Gerasmia, chief of staff of the CEO, shared insights into the planned inspections aimed at pinpointing the root causes of the flooding. The inspection will commence at the La Paz plaza, proceeding to Huervana Street, and then covering Gen. Luna-Mabini Street and Jalandoni streets. Scheduled for Thursday, this walk-through will involve opening the drainage systems to investigate why flooding persists despite the DPWH's installation of large drainage structures.

The affected areas include Jaro, Mandurriao, La Paz, and City Proper. Gerasmia emphasized the objective of the inspection, stating, "We will see and determine the problem." During the meeting, the DPWH committed to installing a larger inlet to better handle the influx of rainwater.

Gerasmia also highlighted ongoing drainage projects by the DPWH in La Paz and City Proper. These projects, once connected to the city's pumping stations, are anticipated to alleviate the flooding issues. Additionally, the GSO will play a vital role in cleaning clogged inlets, which are suspected to contribute to the flooding problem.
