Dumaguete: The head of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOrPPO) is urging local government units (LGUs) to assist law enforcement authorities in monitoring fuel prices in their respective areas, an official said on Wednesday. Col. Timmar Alam, NOrPPO director, stated at a press conference that the police have been tasked with monitoring oil price movements and need the help of the LGUs and the public to prevent hoarding and price surges.

According to Philippines News Agency, Alam mentioned that the police monitor gas stations daily and submit a report to the Department of Energy (DOE). He clarified, however, that their task is limited to monitoring and reporting, and that no arrests can be made. Alam also reminded the public against hoarding fuel, saying only fishers, contractors, and other sectors identified on the list released by the government are exempted and allowed to stock up.

He made the clarification following reports that some people have been seen bulk buying fuel in containers just days after the latest huge oil price adjustment. "But should there be some complaints, it should be the LGU to actually undertake inspections at gas stations as they have a list of those who hold business permits in their areas," Alam said. He noted they have not so far received reports of hoarding or the closure of gas stations in the province for "running out of supply" of fuel.

Meanwhile, the NOrPPO will deploy all its 1,400 personnel during the Holy Week from March 29 to April 5. Alam said police personnel will be sent out to churches and other places of worship, passenger terminals, the airport, sea ports, and other areas of convergence. He said police assistance desks will be set up while checkpoints will also be carried out every day during the entire religious observance.
