Manila: All passengers at the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will be able to enjoy a 50-percent discount from their usual fare beginning March 23 as part of the government's efforts to ease the burden of the public amid rising fuel prices. In a message to reporters on Thursday, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the discount will remain until further notice.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOTr acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez stated that the fare discount aims to help the public by ensuring ease of travel and by helping reduce their daily spending. He emphasized the government's commitment to alleviating the difficulties faced by the Filipino people due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Lopez encouraged motorists to leave their vehicles at home and take advantage of the discount available at the LRT-2 and MRT-3.
The fare discount applies to all passengers and will not impact the existing 50-percent discount for white Beep card holders, including senior citizens, persons with disability, and students. For blue Beep card users, the fare discount will be automatically applied, while passengers without Beep cards may purchase single journey tickets at the discounted rate.
MRT-3 press officer Kath Dominguez assured passengers that the rail line is prepared for any potential increase in passengers due to the fare discount. She clarified that implementing the discount does not require additional budget from the national treasury and will be reflected as a revenue loss for the rail service.
Additionally, the DOTr is considering implementing discounted rides on the LRT-1 and is coordinating with the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) regarding this possibility. However, LRMC press officer Card Cruz noted that no official decision has been made yet concerning a similar discount on LRT-1, and standard fare rates currently apply to all LRT-1 operations. Cruz expressed understanding of the challenges posed by rising oil prices and assured commuters of the company's efforts to collaborate with the government in providing reliable and efficient transport solutions.
