Davao city: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 11, in partnership with the Regional Taxi Operators Association (RTOA), has officially launched a fleet of 19 electric vehicle (EV) taxis, set to operate in Davao City.
According to Philippines News Agency, RTOA president Ryan Sia announced that the initiative is currently in its pilot phase, with the electric vehicles being gradually introduced as replacement units for older taxis. Sia explained that this substitution process is part of an ongoing study to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of EVs in the city's public transportation system.
The newly launched EV units are operated by Krizia, Maro, Durian City Transport Taxi, and Maligaya Taxi. Sia assured that passengers would enjoy safe and comfortable rides, as drivers have undergone training to deliver quality service. The fleet includes plug-in hybrid electric vehicles capable of traveling 50 to 60 kilometers or more on electric power alone.
LTFRB-11 Director Nonito Llanos III praised the RTOA's commitment to advancing sustainable and modernized public transportation in Davao City. He highlighted the gradual transformation towards a modernized transport system, noting the successful operation of approximately 93 modernized jeepneys in Davao del Sur.
Llanos expressed gratitude to the RTOA for their efforts and affirmed LTFRB's partnership in improving the quality of public transport in the city. He emphasized the significance of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, which provides a national framework for the adoption of electric vehicles to decrease reliance on fossil fuels.
