Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Friday pledged to pursue action against two taxi drivers accused of overcharging and stealing from two Thai models and pageant winners during their visit to the Philippines.

According to Philippines News Agency, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II stated that an investigation is underway to identify the drivers and the operators of the involved taxis, with the aim of holding them accountable for causing embarrassment to the country. Mendoza noted that the LTFRB would collaborate with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to gather all necessary information that could lead to the identification of the taxi drivers involved. Additionally, the LTFRB plans to supply information needed for the identification of the operators and ensure they are held responsible.

The incident report details that the two Thai models visited the country for an event on June 13 and hailed a taxi. The driver allegedly refused to use the taxi meter, negotiated a fixed fare, and subsequently stopped the vehicle, claiming it had broken down. During this incident, the taxi driver purportedly colluded with another driver to steal one of the Thai nationals' phones.

Mendoza emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and assured the victims that all measures would be taken to hold the drivers accountable, including their operators. He also highlighted that the LTFRB's investigation and any penalties issued would be separate from potential criminal charges pursued by the PNP.

The LTFRB Chair urged any witnesses to the incident to come forward and assist both the LTFRB and the PNP in their investigations.
