LTFRB Reviews P15 Jeepney Fare Hike Petition

Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is currently evaluating a proposal to increase the minimum fare for public utility jeepneys (PUJ) to PHP15. This consideration arises from a petition submitted by multiple transport groups.

According to Philippines News Agency, the LTFRB announced that the petition is under thorough review, taking into account factors such as fuel price trends, inflation rates, and the broader implications for commuters. The agency emphasized its commitment to sustaining the livelihoods of transport operators while also considering the welfare of commuters, who are significantly impacted by current economic conditions.

Following the review, the LTFRB plans to conduct public hearings and consultations regarding the proposed fare increase, aimed at ensuring transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process. The agency reassures stakeholders that it is dedicated to finding solutions that are fair and equitable for both transport operators and commuters.

As of October 8, 2023, the existing minimum fare is set at PHP13 for traditional PUJs and PHP15 for modern PUJs. Since that date, several transport groups have advocated for a fare hike due to escalating fuel costs, rising food prices, and inflation.
