Magnitude 5.4 quake jolts Davao del Sur

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Davao del Sur on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

 

In a bulletin issued at 5:05 p.m., Phivolcs said the tectonic quake struck 4 km. southwest of the municipality of Magsaysay at 4:05 p.m.

 

It was 19 km. deep.

 

Both aftershocks and damage are expected, according to Phivolcs.

 

Intensity V was felt in Magsaysay, Matanao, and Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; City of Kidapawan, Cotabato; Malungon, Sarangani; City of Koronadal, South Cotabato.

 

Intensity IV was reported in Bansalan, and City of Digos, Davao del Sur; City of Davao; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; M’lang, and Tulunan, Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani; Banga, Tampakan, and Tupi, South Cotabato; City of General Santos.

 

Intensity III was reported in Maco, Davao de Oro; Antipas, Arakan, Kabacan, and Matalam, Cotabato; Glan, Kiamba, Maasim, and Malapatan, Sarangani; Norala, Polomolok, and T’Boli, South Cotabato; City of Cotabato.

 

Intensity II was felt in Kadingilan, Libona, and Talakag, Bukidnon; Mawab, and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Magpet, Cotabato; Maitum, Sarangani; Lake Sebu, South Cotabato; while intensity I was felt in City of Cagayan De Oro; Aleosan, Cotabato.

 

Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental Intensities:

 

Intensity V – City of Kidapawan, Cotabato; City of Koronadal, and Norala, South Cotabato

 

Intensity IV – City of Davao; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Alabel, Sarangani; Tampakan,

 

Tantangan, and Tupi, South Cotabato; City of General Santos; Columbio, Sultan Kudarat

 

Intensity III – Libona, Bukidnon; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Kiamba, Maasim, and Malapatan,

 

Sarangani; Polomolok, Santo Niño, Surallah, and T’Boli, South Cotabato; Isulan, Sultan Kudarat

 

Intensity II – Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Alamada, Cotabato; Maitum, Sarangani;

 

Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

 

Intensity I – City of Malaybalay, Bukidnon; City of Cagayan De Oro

 

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground accelera
