Makati City: A woman who was recently the center of attention after emerging from a sewer in Makati City is set to receive PHP80,000 from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to help her establish a 'sari-sari' store.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian met with the woman, referred to as 'Rose', at the DSWD's Pag-abot Center in Pasay City. The meeting aimed to assess her situation following the viral incident and to confirm government support for her. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to assist families and individuals in street situations.
Gatchalian stated that Rose's aspiration to own a store was supported by a social worker's assessment that she could manage it. Rose, who sustains herself by collecting and selling recyclable materials, explained to Gatchalian that she entered the sewer to retrieve a small blade cutter essential for her work, leading to the viral images.
The DSWD is also exploring ways to assist Rose's partner, 'Jerome', a baker with welding skills, to potentially provide him with a welding machine to stabilize their income.
Gatchalian highlighted Rose's commitment to support the program by participating in outreach operations, encouraging others in similar circumstances to seek help at the Pag-abot Center.
The Pag-abot Center, operational since 2023, offers temporary shelter to individuals before they return to their hometowns, providing support through the Pag-abot Program.
