Malaysia: Malaysia is aiming for continued collaboration between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) after the MILF's recent decision to pause the decommissioning of its final batch of combatants. Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines, Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, expressed these hopes during a chance interview in Taguig City.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Castelino emphasized the importance of cooperation, stating, "I hope all parties will continue to work together." He highlighted that resolving the current situation is crucial and encouraged all involved parties to unite in their efforts. This statement came in response to inquiries about the ongoing developments in the Bangsamoro peace process.
A memorandum order issued on August 16 by MILF Chairman Alhadj Murad Ebrahim instructed all commanders and members to refrain from participating in any decommissioning or normalization activities without prior written approval from the MILF. This directive followed a resolution by the MILF Central Committee on July 19, which temporarily halted the implementation of the fourth and final phase of the decommissioning process.
The Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) outlines a phased decommissioning process for the MILF, with the final phase involving the remaining MILF forces. Malaysia has played a significant role in the peace negotiations, acting as a third-party facilitator and providing a supportive environment for dialogue between the parties involved.
