Manila: Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula made a heartfelt appeal to families, urging them to pay more attention to the youth, who may be silently struggling with issues that often go unnoticed.

According to Philippines News Agency, the archbishop's message of solidarity emphasized the importance of truly listening to and understanding the challenges faced by young people. Many are battling sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, family issues, bullying, and academic pressure. He stressed the need to create environments where youth can express themselves without fear of judgment and seek help without shame.

Advincula's message comes in the wake of the tragic shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University on August 18, which resulted in the deaths of two students, including the shooter. The archbishop underscored that the response to such incidents should extend beyond expressions of solidarity and condolences, urging a deeper examination of the difficulties confronting today's youth.

He called for collective action to foster a culture of care, compassion, dialogue, and accompaniment for the youth, so that violence and hatred do not prevail. In times of grief, Advincula emphasized the power of prayer leading to united action to strengthen these values in society.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Zamboanga also expressed its solidarity with the Jesuit community, the ADZU family, and all those affected by the shooting. They offered their prayers, presence, and support to the academic community as they work toward healing and recovery.

The archdiocese highlighted the role of faith formation and catechesis in nurturing young people and teachers, fostering communities grounded in compassion, respect, dialogue, responsibility, and peace. They reiterated the importance of maintaining schools as safe spaces for learning and personal growth.

Additionally, the archdiocese prayed for authorities to be guided by wisdom, fairness, courage, and a sincere commitment to justice. They emphasized choosing prayer over fear and compassion over condemnation, and pledged to stand with the community in their journey toward healing, justice, and peace.
