Marawi City Encourages Modesty in Fitness Activities

Marawi city: The city government of Marawi has called on residents to maintain a balance between modesty and cultural sensitivity while participating in fitness activities. This appeal comes as the city aims to respect cultural norms while promoting physical health.

According to Philippines News Agency, the city government released a statement expressing its support for individuals engaging in sports and fitness activities, such as fun runs. However, it emphasized the importance of upholding values of modesty, respect, and cultural sensitivity during these activities. The statement particularly addressed female participants, urging them to wear appropriate sports attire that covers the 'awrah,' an Islamic term for sensitive parts of the body, especially in public spaces.

The appeal follows concerns raised by conservative groups on social media, who observed that some individuals, particularly women, were wearing slightly inappropriate apparel while jogging on the city's streets. Marawi City, known as the "Islamic City of Marawi" since April 1980, is the provincial capital of Lanao del Sur and has a predominantly Muslim population, which influences its emphasis on religious values and traditions.
