Manila: The government is considering expanding its Zero Balance Billing (ZBB) program to include pay wards in all Department of Health (DOH)-run hospitals, Malaca±ang announced Tuesday. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s objective to enhance the country's healthcare system.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro revealed in a press briefing that Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa is examining the potential issuance of a department memorandum circular. This circular would mandate all DOH hospitals to implement zero balance billing for pay wards specifically for direct PhilHealth contributors. Castro clarified that pay wards differ from basic accommodations, which are already covered by the current zero balance billing policy.
"This will be closely monitored. The President desires better and more effective health care for Filipinos in the New Philippines," Castro stated. The proposal would obligate DOH hospitals to designate special areas or rooms for PhilHealth direct contributors benefiting from zero balance billing, aiming to offer better amenities compared to common wards.
