Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday highlighted the essential role of public participation in addressing social issues and achieving his vision for a 'Bagong Pilipinas' (New Philippines).
According to Philippines News Agency, in his latest vlog, President Marcos expressed gratitude to Filipinos who reached out with messages and letters following his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27. He encouraged continued public involvement in discussions and efforts regarding national development. Marcos emphasized that active engagement in societal issues is a hallmark of being a new Filipino.
The president described the SONA as an ongoing initiative to tackle the nation's challenges and fulfill the aspirations of Filipinos. He shared that he received numerous messages, especially from young Filipinos, concerned about pressing issues such as health and hunger affecting their families and communities. One notable letter from the Youth for Health Coalition described a young Filipino's struggle as their father undergoes dialysis amid food insecurity.
President Marcos highlighted the significance of government programs in addressing these concerns, particularly the Walang Gutom (Zero Hunger) Program. This initiative assists Filipinos who struggle to secure three meals a day and involves distributing 10-kilogram sacks of rice to families in need, six times a year. Additionally, the government supports feeding programs for students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 who require assistance.
Another letter from Youth for Health Coalition convener Aliyah Mae Lozari urged the government to focus on health issues, including alcohol use and the detrimental effects of secondhand smoke. The letter underscored the importance of prioritizing legislation and health measures to address these challenges.
President Marcos acknowledged the timeliness of these concerns, reiterating that healthcare remains a top priority for the government. He stressed the importance of health, stating that irrespective of one's status, life cannot be fulfilling without it. The health of the youth and citizens of the nation is among the highest priorities for the administration.
President Marcos assured that the concerns voiced through letters and messages would continue to be heard. He emphasized that the nation's progress relies not only on government actions but also on the active participation of its citizens in shaping the country's future.
