Marcos Eyes Stronger PH-Hawaii Tourism Ties.

MANILA: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed openness to further strengthen relations between the Philippines and Hawaii, particularly in the tourism sector. Marcos made the pronouncement during a meeting with a delegation from the Pacific Century Fellow (PCF) in Malacañang. According to Philippines News Agency, the PCF is a group of established and emerging leaders in Hawaii. It was founded by former Honolulu mayor and current president and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, Mufi Hannemann, who was part of the delegation. President Marcos stated, "It is always a pleasure for me to welcome our friends from Hawaii, especially when the purpose of your visit is to continue to find ways to interact even more closely with the Philippines considering, of course, that the Filipino population in Hawaii is a significant one." Hannemann expressed the group's interest in discussing more ways to boost the tourism industry of both the Philippines and Hawaii. He highlighted the opportu nities for collaboration, stating the importance of working with Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco to increase tourism traffic between the two regions. Hannemann noted the increased air service by United Airlines and suggested potential roles for Alaska Airlines to rejuvenate services previously provided by Hawaiian Airlines. According to the Presidential Communications Office, Hannemann is recognized as an active supporter of the Filipino community in Hawaii. He has advocated for the advancement and promotion of Filipinos in the tourism industry workforce, appointing many Filipinos to his Cabinet and various boards and commissions. The PCF delegation is visiting the Philippines to conduct humanitarian activities and strengthen relationships with various sectors. They are seeking opportunities to learn about the country's agriculture, economy, and tourism, among other areas.
