Marcos Prioritizes Education Reforms to Strengthen Learning System

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has committed to prioritizing education reforms to tackle existing challenges and develop a more robust learning system in the Philippines. In the third episode of the BBM Podcast, Marcos conveyed his belief that it is achievable for every Filipino family to have at least one member graduate from college or a technical-vocational education and training course.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos emphasized the importance of quality education and training, stating that without it, Filipinos would struggle to compete in the labor market, thereby losing the advantages of past efforts. He iterated that education is fundamental, describing it as the "greatest resource" and "human capital" of the nation.

President Marcos highlighted that the success of his administration will be measured by advancements in education. He plans to dedicate his remaining tenure to fortifying the education sector, focusing on human development as his top priority. He aims to ensure that the Philippine workforce gains international recognition and appreciation.

In his fourth State of the Nation Address on July 28, Marcos declared education as the prime focus of his administration, pledging continued investment in reforms, infrastructure, and support services. He announced a PHP60-billion allocation for free public college education and technical-vocational programs.

Currently, over two million students benefit annually from the government's free higher education program. The Marcos administration has expanded access, allowing an additional 260,000 youth to avail themselves of free college education. Furthermore, in 2024 alone, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority awarded over 200,000 additional scholarships, providing more individuals with job-ready skills and training.
