Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday addressed the public, challenging Vice President Sara Duterte's recent 'death threat' allegations and emphasizing the need for transparency in government. He criticized the situation for escalating due to Duterte's reluctance to address legitimate concerns regarding alleged financial misconduct in her office. According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos expressed that the controversy could have been avoided if Duterte had engaged with lawmakers' inquiries. In a video message, he remarked, "Ang katotohanan ay hindi dapat i-tokhang," referencing the former president Rodrigo Duterte's contentious anti-drug campaign. Marcos argued that the issue would have concluded if Duterte had adhered to her duty as a public servant by providing truthful answers. Marcos further criticized Duterte's use of threats and profanities, calling them alarming and inappropriate in a democratic society like the Philippines. He questioned the ease with which such threats were made ag ainst him, asking, "Kung ganun na lang kadali ang pagplano sa pagpatay ng isang Presidente, papaano pa kaya ang mga pangkaraniwan na mamamayan?" Marcos stated his intent to combat such criminal attempts and stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law. This statement marks Marcos's first public response to Duterte's accusations, which included threats against him, First Lady Liza Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Duterte's comments were made during a legislative inquiry at the House of Representatives, where her chief of staff, Zuleika Lopez, was detained. President Marcos reiterated the constitutional obligation of government officials to maintain transparency and accountability, condemning any attempts to obstruct the pursuit of truth. He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution, emphasizing his commitment to governance and the rule of law. Marcos concluded by calling for respect for legal processes and adherence to laws, reminding officials of their responsibilities to the Filipino peo ple. In response to Duterte's statements, law enforcement agencies have been prompted to investigate and ensure the President's safety.
