DATU PIANG, Maguindanao -- More than four months after they voluntarily showed up to police office and admitted they were into illegal drugs, drug personalities on Thursday submitted themselves into illegal drug tests.
"The result was all negative (of drug use)," says Mayor Genuine Kamaong of Datu Piang, Maguindanao.
About 206 drug personalities are now productive citizens and among the "warm bodies" who are helping save low-lying villages of Datu Piang from floods by volunteering to remove water hyacinths that clogged Dansalan River.
Kamaong said with the help of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PDEA-ARMM), a mandatory drug testing was conducted to determine if the drug personalities have really mended their ways.
One of the drug personalities spoke to local reporters on condition he remained unidentified.
"Life is good, life has improved, thanks to this campaign, we are now living peaceful and productive lives," Kamrodin, not his name, told reporters.
Kamaong said regularly, he is calling the drug personalities into a meeting and community services aside from closely monitoring their activities with their families.
Police Senior Inspector Oscar Ibal, Datu Piang town police chief, said crime incidents in town have gone down, and drug personalities are seen working for a living. "I hope this will continue," he said.
Mayor Kamaong said he was happy with this development. "The campaign against illegal drugs will continue because we see its good results now," he added. (PNA)
