MGEN Plans Transition to Solar and Battery Storage at Iloilo City Plant

Iloilo city: Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) is planning to install solar panels and a battery energy storage system to replace the diesel units currently undergoing decommissioning in Barangay Ingore in the La Paz district. The decommissioning of the two diesel plant units began last year and is projected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.

According to Philippines News Agency, MGEN Thermal Panay energy site head Antonio Cabalhug Jr. stated that the existing technology is not economically viable, prompting the shift to solar and battery systems as part of sustainability efforts. The company plans to replace the outdated technology to enhance efficiency and environmental compatibility. The existing three-unit coal-fired power plant will continue to serve as the base-load plant, while the diesel units, with a derated capacity of 40 megawatts, were previously utilized during peak demand periods.

In addition to the solar and battery installations, Cabalhug mentioned plans to support MGEN's sister companies in adjacent areas. He highlighted the development of an integrated area that will supply both water and electricity. MGEN Thermal president and CEO Felino Bernardo noted ongoing development of the Iloilo City waste-to-energy project, which will provide fuel for the coal plant. However, he indicated that the company is not currently exploring wind energy, as opportunities in Panay are more aligned with thermal energy.
