Manila: Hopes are high among members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) following the appointment of Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento as the new Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU).
According to Philippines News Agency, Mohagher Iqbal, senior vice chair and head of the MILF peace implementing panel, stated that the Mindanao peace process gains momentum with the appointment of Sarmiento. Iqbal highlighted the governance experience that Sarmiento brings, including his understanding of municipal administration, regional development coordination, and national government and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) intergovernmental work.
Iqbal emphasized that the MILF sees an opportunity in Sarmiento's appointment for the substantial fulfillment of the Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro (CAB) and building the foundations of peace in the region. Representing MILF chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, Iqbal also expressed gratitude for the contributions of former peace adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. in the country's peace efforts.
Iqbal noted that Galvez has been more than just an official but a partner to the MILF during the critical years of implementation. He reflected on the historic achievements during Galvez's tenure, such as the passage of the Bangsamoro Organic Law and the commencement of decommissioning work, and wished Galvez strength and success in his future endeavors.
