Militants Sued as 8 Cops Hurt in Bonifacio Day Rally.

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated criminal proceedings against members of a militant group accused of assaulting police officers during a Bonifacio Day protest in Manila on November 30. The charges, filed with the Manila City Prosecutor's Office, include violations of Batas Pambansa 880, or the Public Assembly Act of 1985, direct assault, and disobedience to a person in authority. These charges target a leader and several unidentified individuals, known as John Does, from the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), according to PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo during a press briefing at Camp Crame, Quezon City. According to Philippines News Agency, the protest on Recto Avenue resulted in injuries to eight officers of the Manila Police District (MPD). One protester has been detained by the MPD-General Assignment Investigation. Fajardo stated, "It appeared in our investigation that the arrested suspect was the one who hurt our police officers." She also mentioned that the KMU leader, who is c urrently at large, along with several John Does, were seen in videos assaulting police officers. The PNP is also working on recovering a body-worn camera reportedly taken by a protester. In response to the escalating situation at the rally, an additional 500 personnel from the Crowd Dispersal Management contingents of the Southern Police District and Northern Police District were deployed. MPD chief Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay engaged with the protesters to facilitate a peaceful dispersal.
