Manila: The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has affirmed the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao's (BARMM) strategic role as the Philippines' primary export gateway in advancing the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
According to Philippines News Agency, MinDA Chairperson and Philippine Signing Minister for BIMP-EAGA, Secretary Leo Tereso Magno, highlighted President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to position BARMM at the forefront of subregional trade and integration. This was during a meeting with the region's Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua.
President Marcos continues to emphasize competitive, resilient, and people-centered growth, with BARMM's strategic positioning expected to unlock new opportunities for trade, investment, and regional integration. Magno stated that BARMM's participation in BIMP-EAGA reflects the administration's commitment to transform Mindanao's southern frontier into a hub of export-driven growth, ensuring that integration delivers tangible opportunities for communities across ASEAN.
The discussions were focused on the Bangsamoro Economic Corridor Initiative, aiming to establish BARMM as a central trade hub through port modernization, logistics expansion, and enhanced maritime connectivity. Priority areas include export facilitation, Customs, Immigration, Quarantine, and Security (CIQS) systems, halal industries and fisheries development, and customs and trade linkages aligned with ASEAN standards.
MinDA officials, along with BARMM's Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Bangsamoro Board of Investments, and Ministry of Trade, Investments, and Tourism, emphasized the importance of institutional cooperation to accelerate BARMM's role as a gateway for Philippine exports to ASEAN and beyond.
The Philippines' hosting of the 48th ASEAN Summit and the Special BIMP-EAGA Leaders' Summit positions the country to align the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 with ASEAN Vision 2045, with BARMM's export gateway role serving as a cornerstone of this agenda.
