MMDA Collects Over 600 Tons of Garbage in NCR Streets and Pumping Stations

Manila: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has collected 603.723 tons of garbage in cleaning operations across the National Capital Region (NCR) following the floods caused by the enhanced southwest monsoon. A total of 526.8 tons were gathered from the 71 pumping stations between July 18 and 22. Additionally, 26.37 truckloads, or 76.923 tons, were hauled from various areas in the region from July 21 to 22.

According to Philippines News Agency, MMDA Chair Romando Artes stated that these cleanup efforts are crucial for the uninterrupted function of NCR's drainage systems and pumping stations. The operations align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to implement proactive measures and ensure readiness against adverse weather impacts. Artes highlighted that plastics and other debris can cause overheating by entangling pump engines, thereby affecting their efficiency and potentially damaging equipment.

On Tuesday, MMDA personnel cleared large amounts of debris at the Tripa De Gallina Pumping Station, including old furniture and broken appliances. Artes assured that all 71 pumping stations in the NCR are fully operational to manage regional flooding. The MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office regularly conducts declogging and dredging operations in Metro Manila's major thoroughfares as part of their preemptive measures against flooding.

Artes also noted that the antiquated drainage system, in service for over 50 years, contributes to the region's flooding issues. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive drainage master plan that includes upgrading and expanding the existing network and constructing new pumping stations. He urged the public to practice proper waste segregation to aid in addressing the flooding challenges.

Additionally, Artes inspected the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) Batasan Station to investigate potential flooding causes. He pointed out that the inlet size had been reduced, affecting flood water management, and stated plans to widen the existing inlet. Representatives from the Quezon City government and San Miguel Corporation MRT-7 Corporation participated in the inspection. SMC Infrastructure committed to addressing and correcting the issue promptly.
