Pasig city: Cyclists at the end of their travel before reporting to work can now use showers and freshen up at the Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA) in Pasig City as part of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) efforts to promote active and sustainable transport in Metro Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, during its launch on Tuesday, MMDA Chair Romando 'Don' Artes stated that the project was only the start, and similar facilities will be introduced throughout Metro Manila in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to promote sustainable transport. Artes emphasized the commitment to supporting cyclists, especially those commuting to work, with plans to install more facilities across the region.

The project includes four shower rooms, with specific allocations for males, females, and two all-gender options. Additional amenities comprise bike racks and changing rooms, ensuring convenience for cyclists. During the event, LPG distributor Republic Gas Corp. (Regasco) pledged to contribute hygiene supplies, including soaps, shampoos, and 1,000 towels, for facility users.

The MMDA has partnered with private sector entities such as Maynilad, Manila Water, and Meralco to subsidize water and electricity costs. The authority is also considering operating the showers around the clock to accommodate roughly 1,700 cyclists using the EDSA bicycle lanes daily.

For security and monitoring, users must register upon entry to access the facilities for free. An MMDA press officer mentioned that as the program is in its pilot phase, protocols are being refined, with updates on guidelines to be provided later.

To maintain the facilities, cleaners and security personnel have been assigned. The launch event was attended by Artes, MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III, and other officials, alongside representatives from partner agencies and private sector partners. Cycling community groups such as MNL Moves, Move As One Coalition, and others also participated in the event.
