Pasig city: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday met with local traffic officials to discuss ways to prevent a repeat of the traffic gridlock along Marcos Highway last Saturday.

According to Philippines News Agency, during the meeting at the MMDA headquarters in Pasig City, MMDA General Manager Procopio Lipana, Traffic Discipline Office Director for Enforcement Vic Nu±ez, and other MMDA officials met with traffic heads from Cainta, Antipolo, Marikina, and Pasig.

Lipana presented the MMDA's plans to help ease congestion along Marcos Highway in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive for coordination in managing traffic and strategies.

Nu±ez highlighted the need for uniform traffic rules among all local government units (LGUs) along the highway, particularly regarding the enforcement of a truck ban. 'Traffic management plans of neighboring LGUs along Marcos Highway must be well-coordinated. We are eyeing the harmonization of a uniform truck ban along the entire stretch of Marcos Highway,' he stated.

To address future gridlock scenarios, the MMDA is considering replacing concrete barriers at the intersection of Marcos Highway and Gil Fernando Avenue with movable orange barriers, allowing for manual adjustments in traffic flow.

The four concerned LGUs have agreed to sign a memorandum of agreement with the MMDA to strictly enforce anti-illegal terminal and anti-illegal vendor policies in the area. Officials from the MMDA and the four LGUs will conduct an ocular inspection on Wednesday to further assess the situation and consider additional adjustments and interventions.

On Saturday, a massive traffic jam occurred along Marcos Highway, caused by a large volume of vehicles and counterflowing traffic.
