Manila: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday urged shopping malls to offer free overnight parking to the public, in response to anticipated heavy rainfall in Metro Manila and nearby regions due to Typhoon Inday (international name Bavi) and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

According to Philippines News Agency, MMDA Chair Romando Artes, during a media interview at the MMDA headquarters in Pasig City, revealed that the agency is collaborating with mall operators to permit residents, especially those residing in flood-prone areas, to utilize mall parking areas for their vehicles overnight. This initiative aims to safeguard vehicles and valuables from potential flood damage.

Artes explained that while the overnight parking will be free, regular parking fees would apply once the malls reopen at 6 a.m. "What they will make free, say they closed at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., that is free. But starting 6 a.m., there is already a fee," he stated.

Several mall operators, including SM, Robinsons, Ayala, and Megaworld, have already consented to participate by offering free overnight parking in Metro Manila and other regions potentially affected by flooding. The MMDA is also coordinating with other mall groups in Ortigas and Araneta to extend this initiative.

In a memorandum issued on Thursday, Artes instructed all shopping mall operators to make their parking spaces available "as temporary safe parking spaces for vehicles" across Luzon. The arrangement was set to commence Thursday evening and will remain in effect until the typhoon subsides.

To assist residents, the MMDA's Public Information Office will repost and disseminate the malls' official announcements regarding available parking spaces. The memorandum emphasized the significance of this collaborative public service effort in protecting lives and properties amid severe weather conditions.
