MMDA to Release EDSA Traffic Overhaul Plan Next Week

Manila: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that an overhaul of traffic measures for the EDSA rehabilitation project will be released next week. During a meeting at the MMDA headquarters in Pasig City, MMDA Chair Romando Artes presented 'final intervention measures' to the 17 National Capital Region mayors comprising the Metro Manila Council (MMC) to gather their feedback.

According to Philippines News Agency, the complete overhaul of EDSA's traffic scheme is part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to prioritize public convenience. "With the expected decrease in lane capacity of EDSA, we are tasked to develop the final plan centered on the President's directive to ease the inconvenience of motorists and most especially, commuters. We will likewise clear and maintain alternate routes, which will be identified once the final plan has come out," Artes said.

During the meeting, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon assured that the EDSA rehabilitation project is undergoing careful and thorough planning to minimize adverse effects. "We want to lay out plans that are concrete, sure, and uncompromised to make sure that motorists and commuters will not bear too much burden as we roll out road works," Dizon said.

Dizon further mentioned that the rehabilitation project is part of the President's flagship 'Build Better More' infrastructure program. "The only way to build a better EDSA is to do this huge and overall plan to overhaul its stretch. We need this massive change to beautify this major artery," he stated.

On a related note, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo assured that construction works for the rehabilitation project would be accelerated. "With the help of DOTr and the MMDA, we can ease the burden of our motorists and commuters amid the looming road works," Bernardo said.

The EDSA rehabilitation project, which includes road repairs and drainage improvements, is part of the government's solution to alleviate traffic congestion and flooding along one of Metro Manila's busiest thoroughfares. Authorities have committed to completing the project before the Philippines hosts the ASEAN Summit in 2026.
