More Passengers Expected at Philippine Ports Through Maundy Thursday

Manila: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is anticipating a continued increase in passenger traffic at ports nationwide, particularly in Panay and Guimaras, which are among the busiest during the Holy Week period.

According to Philippines News Agency, PPA spokesperson Eunice Samonte mentioned in an interview that data shows the daily average number of passengers at ports in Guimaras and Panay typically exceeds 13,000. However, during peak seasons such as Holy Week, this number can rise to more than 20,000. The projected daily passenger traffic could reach up to 19,279, or approximately 173,509 weekly, positioning these ports as the third busiest in the country, following Mindoro and Batangas.

Samonte noted the expected increase in passengers from the afternoon and into the following day. To manage the anticipated influx, she urged travelers to book their tickets early and arrive at ports at least three hours before their scheduled departure. This recommendation aims to alleviate congestion and prevent delays.

In response to the growing demand and to enhance passenger convenience, the PPA is planning to introduce an online ticketing system in major provincial terminals by year's end. This system will enable travelers to buy tickets online or via kiosks at ports, with options for cash or digital payments. Currently, passengers are required to purchase tickets through the individual websites of shipping lines, as a unified platform does not exist.

Additionally, Samonte encouraged shipping lines and maritime agencies to deploy extra vessels to accommodate the increased number of travelers during peak periods.
