MELAKA, In order to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer, a tahfiz student decided to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam at the age of 21, and it was evident that his efforts paid off when he managed to record an excellent result of 9A. Muhammad Syahrul Sa'aban, who is a student of Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Quran Rabiatul Adawiyah in Bukit Katil here, said that even though he only received formal academic education up to standard six, it was not an obstacle albeit his religious backdrop if something is done earnestly. According to Muhammad Syahrul who has memorised up to 30 parts of the Quran, he only had the opportunity to take the SPM exam privately last year after being prevented from sitting for the exam in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Before this, my focus was only to complete the memorisation of 30 juzuk (parts) but to face the SPM (mainstream school syllabus), I also spent time studying and revising my lessons over a period of a year and 10 months. 'Besides that, I also divided my time wisely to attend religious studies and Al-Quran classes so that the memorisation is not lost,' he said here today. According to Muhammad Syahrul who is also the youngest of six siblings, he also attended tuition classes for two hours every day at (SM) Muzaffar Syah Science Secondary School (MOZAC) Ayer Keroh, in preparation for the SPM. He added that he was also interested in the additional mathematics subject and said that to ensure he understood the subject better, he made the most of television, YouTube and Google applications to bolster his studies. 'I am very grateful that my target of scoring high marks like this was achieved, thanks to divine providence because I nearly gave up at times, and was in disarray on how to stay on course to sit for the SPM exam. "However, with the encouragement of my mother and the madrasah founder and friends, I kept my ambition on course until I succeeded in achieving this result,' he said. Muhammad Syahrul, who is in the science stream, also intends to continue his studies in the field of engineering in Japan or Germany if given the opportunity after this. He also hoped his good results will change the skeptical view of some people towards the ability of tahfiz (religious) students to succeed in the academics. 'Thank God, all the efforts and sacrifices this time finally yielded results, my SPM success is also a gift for my family and people of the madrasah here,' he said. Source: BERNAMA News Agency
