NAIA Expressway Speed Limit Increased to 80 kph Starting January 15

Manila: The speed limit on the NAIA Expressway (NAIAx) will be increased from 60 to 80 kilometers per hour (kph) starting January 15. This adjustment aims to enhance the driving experience for motorists while maintaining safety standards.

According to Philippines News Agency, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) chairman and chief executive officer Ramon Ang announced the decision, emphasizing the importance of safety in implementing the new speed limit. NAIAx, an elevated toll road, connects the Skyway system to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminals 1, 2, and 3.

The speed limit increase is part of a broader initiative to reduce congestion, including the ongoing reconfiguration of exit plazas at NAIAx. Ang also noted that the 80 kph speed limit will be applied to straight sections of Skyway Stage 3 starting January 20, while curved sections on both expressways will maintain the existing 60 kph limit.

Ang highlighted that the continuation of the lower speed limit on curved sections is crucial to prevent accidents due to miscalculations or oversteering. The design constraints during the construction of NAIAx and Skyway Stage 3, including limited space and right-of-way issues, necessitated redesigns that resulted in sharp curves requiring reduced speeds.

Traffic patrollers equipped with radar speed guns will continue to enforce the speed limits and issue citations to motorists who exceed them, ensuring compliance with the new regulations.
