Manila: The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and empowering Filipino elderly through a comprehensive array of health, economic, and digital inclusion programs, while preparing them for participation in the upcoming May 12 midterm elections.
According to Philippines News Agency, NCSC Officer-in-Charge and Commission Member IV Dr. Mary Jean Loreche highlighted the agency's holistic approach to eldercare, which includes health initiatives, community-based support, digital literacy, and livelihood training. Loreche emphasized the importance of ensuring the welfare and rights of senior citizens, aiming to provide them with a dignified and healthy aging experience.
To facilitate safe voting for senior citizens, Loreche announced early voting hours from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and mentioned plans for logistical support, including the possibility of free transport. These measures are part of the NCSC's broader commitment to ensuring that no senior citizen is excluded from health, livelihood opportunities, or their right to vote.
Key programs include the expanded centenarian cash gift, which was introduced earlier this year in Malaca±ang, and the establishment of community-based care centers in collaboration with local governments. These care centers have been launched in Moalboal (Cebu), Cabatuan (Iloilo), Malaybalay (Bukidnon), Kidapawan (Cotabato), and Zamboanguita (Negros Oriental), with additional centers expected after the elections.
Loreche also noted that the NCSC is collaborating with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and is finalizing an agreement with the Department of Tourism to offer training and livelihood opportunities in tourism areas for seniors. Additionally, the NCSC is partnering with the Department of Health and the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. to expand coverage for age-related health conditions.
On the legislative front, Loreche mentioned that the Magna Carta for Senior Citizens and the Violence Against Older Persons bills are making progress in Congress. Efforts are also underway to enhance digital literacy among seniors to protect them from scams.
