Bacolod: Negros Occidental continues to push for accelerated transition to renewable energy (RE), highlighting three major initiatives in the Renewable Energy Week Expo 2026 at SMX Convention Center here from May 7 to 9. Led by the Negros Occidental provincial government, the event, now on its third year, is considered the biggest renewable energy convention in the Visayas.
According to Philippines News Agency, former governor Rafael Coscolluela, who serves as the provincial consultant on energy and environment concerns, emphasized the province's goal of an accelerated transition to renewable energy through the SecuRE Negros comprehensive power security program. "We are happy with the results so far. I think we can rightly claim that Negros Occidental has become one of the RE capitals of the country. We are ahead of most other provinces in RE transition," he stated.
Coscolluela highlighted the necessity of long-term energy solutions and the importance of stronger collaboration among different sectors. "The increasing volatility of global oil prices reminds us of the importance of investing in renewable energy and sustainable alternatives. Through this Expo, we hope to strengthen partnerships, encourage innovation, and inspire communities to embrace energy solutions that secure a better future for Negros Occidental," he added.
During the three-day event, the provincial government is set to launch the Energy Innovation Sprint aimed at maximizing biodiesel harvesting, the Be REady Roadshow to empower local government units and communities in leading the transition toward clean and renewable energy, and the REcreate community-based RE program. The kick-off activities will include discussions and exhibitions on renewable energy opportunities, energy efficiency initiatives, and clean mobility technologies. These practical solutions are designed to support households, businesses, and local governments in transitioning to cleaner and more stable energy systems.
Major attractions of the expo include policy and technical forums, an electric vehicle display, and exhibits by solar solution providers showcasing renewable energy technologies, installation services, and financing options accessible to consumers and institutions. The provincial government has partnered with the Department of Energy, Negrosanon Initiative for Climate and the Environment (NICE), and Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation Inc. to stage this year's Renewable Energy Week.
NICE secretary general Joshua Villalobos remarked that the RE Week Expo serves as a vital platform for raising awareness and encouraging collective action toward renewable energy solutions. "Expanding access to clean and affordable energy is crucial not only in addressing the climate crisis, but also in reducing energy poverty experienced by many communities and in ensuring that communities benefit from our energy transition to a more sustainable energy sector," he concluded.
