Manila: Pilot beneficiaries of the national government's Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food and Transport (UPLIFT) financial aid in Negros Occidental are expressing gratitude for the extra cash allocated for household essentials.

According to Philippines News Agency, data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR) indicated that PHP16.648 million was disbursed to 8,324 clients in Negros Occidental as of July 26, following the commencement of payouts in three local government units (LGUs) on July 20. These beneficiaries, part of Group 2 or the 'near-poor' households, received PHP2,000 each during the initial payout.

Among the grateful recipients are Lilia Santerva, a farm worker, and Daniel James Paulo, a college student from Talisay City, along with tricycle driver Ramonito Lozano and solo parent Margie Monteagudo from Sagay City. Santerva highlighted the significant impact of the aid, enabling her to purchase more food and rice, as her farm income is limited. Paulo, who lives alone, expressed appreciation for the assistance that will help cover his household expenses after the loss of his mother.

Lozano, appreciative of being included as a beneficiary, plans to use the funds for household items and utility bills. Monteagudo, who supports a child in college, mentioned that the assistance will aid in managing school expenses, providing much-needed support as a solo parent.

Negros Occidental aims to support 103,196 of the total 171,594 target beneficiaries listed in Negros and Siquijor. DSWD-NIR Director Arwin Razo announced a massive payout across the region within the week, extending the pilot implementation to five LGUs, including Talisay City, Sagay City, and Hinigaran. The UPLIFT program, designed to help households meet essential needs and strengthen economic resilience, relies on the Community-Based Monitoring System of the Philippine Statistics Authority to ensure aid reaches eligible households based on validated socio-economic data.
